Many search engines and directories charge in one way or another to include your website in their listings. How much they charge and for what service is constantly changing as they look for new ways to generate income.

When to use paid submissions - 

• To get your website into the search engines more quickly. Once your website is included in one or more of the major search engines it will begin to appear in other search engines that take some or all of their results from the most important search engines, for example Yahoo Web Pages take most of their results from Google and ODP supplies results to AOL, Netscape, there are many other such relationships.
• To bring more visitors to your website. You decide how important it is to have visitors, is it worth paying Yahoo $300 per year? If you are generating sales leads or actual sales the answer is probably Yes, otherwise No. 

  It is possible to promote your site in some of the search engines by buying keyword rankings or a featured position in their listings. Warning - visitors are more reluctant to visit commercial sites they can see have purchased their position and will more often move on to site in the regular listings. 

• To have the search engines review your website frequently. If you will change the content of your website often and you want the changes reflected in the search engines you can pay to have specific web pages reviewed every few days.

* A website may not be accepted by a search engine. Each search engine or directory has its own criteria for entry into their listings and there is no guarantee that a submission will be accepted.
