Logistics and Inventory management are a part of many programmes. If they are not controlled properly programmes loose effectiveness, people suffer and in the worst case may die.

I have managed material inventories in a refugee setting as well as in business. I use and teach proven methods of inventory control. These include calculation of min./max. levels and reorder points, time series analysis of usage, contingency planning, documentation of receipts and issues, and physical counts.

Scheduling optimises the use of resources. Manpower, materials and time are the resources available. The size and complexity of the programme determines the type of scheduling that is required. PERT is appropriate for large one time projects, CPM is suited to construction where estimates are more accurate, smaller projects are less demanding and can be accommodated by computer programs such as MS Project.

I have used a variety of scheduling tools both manual and computerised.

Organisations need policies to guide their activities and policies need procedures to ensure tasks are carried out in accordance with the organisation's policies. Most organisations have policies but many do not have procedures to guide their staff. This is especially important in the areas of personnel, purchasing and inventory management.

I have extensive experience in analysing the needs of organisations, designing systems and procedures to meet their needs and implementing manual and computerised systems.

Surveys and data analysis are important tools in disaster management and programme design and evaluation. They must be prepared using simple, unbiased language, asking the right questions and be carried out by a well trained team.

I have worked on survey teams for repatriation, agriculture, water and sanitation, public health, medical and nutritional, using various programs to analyse the data (Statpac, SPSS, EPI, Access, Approach, spreadsheet).

Computers are effective tools when used by a well trained staff for the right job. They can improve organisation, accountability and responsiveness.

The internet is now a powerful tool for IOs/NGOs - communication, information collection and sharing, and as a reference tool.

I have implemented computer systems for numerous NGOs. I have network experience and proficiently use programming languages such as Access, RPG and HTML.

Training is an integral part of most successful programmes. In a development programme one of the goals has to be self-sufficiency and this comes through training and experience. In relief one of the goals is to share the knowledge of disaster management which enhances the coping mechanisms of the affected community.

Communications are vital to all activities - The right information must get to the right people at the right time to make good decisions. Too much information can cause information overload and confuse issues, too little and decision makers cannot identify critical issues and act on them.

I have experience using HF (long range radio), VHF (short range radio), Capsat and Mini-m (satellite - voice, email, fax and data) to enhance programme management.
